Education Preservation Mitigation

Our Impact

With our stove, households have more disposable income and time, fewer trees are cut, and indoor air pollution and CO2 production is decreased.

As a result, children are better educated and fed, forests are preserved, indoor air pollution related illnesses are reduced, and climate change is mitigated.

Since inception to Sept 2023, we have distributed 61,534 cookstoves in sub-Saharan Africa & Asia.

Saved a collective $86 million USD (if buying fuel) or 20,615 years (if collecting fuel).

Reduced global carbon emissions by 1 million tons of CO2.

(comparable to taking more than 300,000 cars off the road)

Improved the health and financial wellbeing of 366,000 beneficiaries.

Stove User Spotlights

Madam Nakiito

“My two Berkeley-Darfur Stoves are now the twin hearts of my home. I use them each and every day to look after my family.”

  • Before losing her vision, Madam Nakiito ran a small restaurant at one of Kampala’s many outdoor markets. Fortunately, Madam Nakiito’s blindness came gradually, and she bought a small plot of land and built rental units that now provide the entirety of her income. She lives on the land with 20 family members for whom she is the primary provider.

Given the number of people she takes care of, cooking represents a major expense. On food alone, Madame Nakiito spends about 50,000 Ugandan shillings ($15 USD) a day. As the price of charcoal rises, finding places to save money becomes ever more important.

After she purchased her first Berkeley-Darfur Stove, she immediately noticed she was spending less money on fuel and less time preparing food. With the money she saves, she buys healthy foods like milk and vegetables that she otherwise could not afford and small luxuries for herself like sugar for tea.

Bridget Makiyimba

“The BDS has given me more time to spend with my children. With the money I save I can build a home for them and provide a better future.”

  • Bridget is an elementary school teacher in Western Uganda’s Masindi District who normally cooks four meals a day for her five-person family.

When she started cooking with the BDS, Bridget noticed that she was spending far less on fuel for cooking. With the money she is saving, she plans to buy land and build a house. After more than a year of using our stove, she looks forward to getting her plot soon!

In addition, the stove reduces cooking time by half. Instead of spending hours tending to the fire, Bridget now gets to enjoy a well-deserved rest, and can spend more time with her children. The money and time she saves using has changed her life and she hopes more people will have access to this technology.
