Our Stove
Potential Energy manufactures and distributes the Berkeley-Darfur Stove (BDS), an innovative cookstove which:
Uses
66% less
fuel
Mitigates
Deforestation by reducing fuel use
Produces
77 % fewer
carbon emissions
Decreases co2
emissions by
6 tons /year
Every day, it saves an average:
1–2 hours in cooking
1–3 hours collecting firewood
30% of household energy costs
Over the lifespan of the stove, it saves:
2,190 hours cooking (3 months)
$1,416 USD (5 million UGX) if buying fuel or 2,920 hours (4 months) if collecting firewood
18 tons of carbon/ CO2e
Why the Berkeley-Darfur Stove?
The stove has been independently evaluated by the Environmental Protection Agency and Makerere University and found to have a thermal efficiency of 39.5%*, as opposed to traditional stoves which have efficiency ratings of 5%.
Other stoves are too small, difficult to use, heavy, smoky, expensive, fragile, use only a fuel type that may be unavailable, and/or have no money-back guarantee.
*Test results can be found at the here.
-
Saving 30,000–100,000 UGX/month in fuel costs, the BDS pays for itself in 1-2 months and saves enough to put two children through primary school.
-
Made from stainless steel and iron, the BDS lasts 3 years using firewood, 5 years using charcoal and has a 30-day money back guarantee and 1-year warranty.
-
Stable for mingling posho (thick porridge) and lightweight (4.5kg) the BDS is easily moved outside for cooking, leading to even less smoke exposure. The BDS is easy to light due to good aeration, and cooks at twice the speed of an open fire.
-
The BDS can use wood, charcoal, briquettes, and other biomass (like maize cobs), allowing for flexibility if a particular fuel is unavailable. It holds small, medium, and large saucepans, accommodating 8-10 people (a typical refugee or rural household) and can be flipped over for frying, roasting and making chapati.
